Anda Kheema Roti

‘The Best Food May be available in five star hotels but the tastiest is on the street.’ Ladies and Gentlemen let me present to you a classic delicacy available in a mini restaurant attached to the MM Road Mosque called Charminar Kabab Paradise. It is known by various names in different places. Englishmen call it Minced Lamb Meat Stuffed Flatbread while others serving rolls name it Baida Roti. I have had numerous types of kheema parathas in many restaurants but trust me nothing beats the one made by this impressive small joint in Frazer Town for just Rs.80. One of the reasons for Charminar’s success is a great demand for this wonderful item that attracts a lot of people. It can be had anytime-morning, afternoon, evening or night and will indeed satisfy your tummy. Crispy on the top, juicy in the centre and soft below makes the Anda Keema Roti sumptuous and a fantastic treat. The Rumali roti is folded in a remarkably unique manner to make 3 layers with chicken/meat and onions in the middle and is fried till it gets a brownish colour. An exact whole square shape makes it easier to eat, serve and also to cut into smaller pieces. If you eat this once, I am sure you will keep coming back to fulfill your cravings.

Chinese Bhel

It’s no longer just breakfast, lunch and dinner but we need food at least every few hours from morning till night. That’s why we love tea breaks and snacks breaks. Oh! Imagine the fun during hi-tea parties. Speaking of snacks, there are innumerable choices and thousands of items to full our tummies with. Let me tell you of a simple yet exquisite dish that is fulfilling and exciting to the palate. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am referring to the Chinese Bhel which I really enjoy eating. Easily my favourite chaat and a must have at Shiv Sagar restaurant. It has a unique and appetizing tate. It is so amazingly delectable and flavorous that you can’t stop eating- just like another snack brand’s modified tagline (LAYS Chips) – ‘ No one can eat just a bite’. It is neither a fattening nor rich food so it saves me from the guilt of having to exercise after eating two whole plates.

If you are exhausted and hungry after tiring shopping on Commercial Street then blindly head to this palace and you won’t be disappointed though it is very difficult to get a table as Shiv Sagar is always overcrowded. Other delicious food items in the menu that will leave you craving for more are Nachos, Cheese Dosa, Kadai Paneer and baby corn manchurian. The lychee with ice cream and sizzling brownie is mouth watering. Service is pretty decent. Food is good. However the ambience is poor and cleanliness can be improved.

Organic Health Bar

Manufactured by Splendid food Company, Chennai, this fantastic product is available in health food stores like Brown Tree, Nuts and spices, selected supermarkets as well as on Big Basket. In today’s society everyone has become health conscious and are crazy for fat free and diet food. Organic Health Bar is indeed an excellent, wonderful and truly ‘splendid’ option that can revolutionise the way people snack and soon capture the markets of the modern FMCG and packaged food World. It is made from the freshest and best quality organic ingredients, oats and healthy nuts like almonds. It satisfies hunger attacks and cravings for something substantial and ‘delicious’ big time and yet is very light and nutritious. I am a ‘sweet’ person who loves desserts and what can be better than this health bar that does not add extra calories contributing to our round shape? It has a taste similar to the traditional Indian Sweet – ‘Chikki’ that is made from groundnuts and jaggery but is well packed and not as sticky and messy as the former. This is a new innovation of the popular energy bars which are essential for trekkers and sportsmen.

Chicken Tikka Roll

What can be a better way to fight ‘hunger attacks’ than a big fat juicy kathi roll? Chunks of meat and sauces wrapped in roti is one of the most exquisite and satisfying foods that can be had anytime and anywhere- while travelling, while working and even while relaxing. It is also a much more nutritious option than fast food. Sometimes rolls can be a complete meal in itself. God Bless the person who invented the idea of serving the most sought after Tandoor dish in this form! I would pick two joints that make hygienic, tantalizing and delicious Chicken Tikka Rolls in Bangalore- Khan Saheb (Many branches located in different areas- Brigade Road, Commercial Street, Frazer Town etc) and 7 Plates (Located in Benson Town). Both are quite different from each other. At 7 Plates the tang of chutney is more significant that imparts and enhances the flavour of the chicken and is succulent. At Khan Saheb the taste of the chargrilled Tikka is more prominent and is piquant. This is something that I personally do not like to share with anyone. We also have different choices in the wrap- Wheat Roti, Paratha and rumali roti- with or without egg. When you’re hungry with no particular craving and not sure what to eat, then go to any place famous for its wraps and you will surely leave with three cheers for Chicken Tikka Roll!

Chicken Kebab

A decade ago when Bangaloreans said let’s go out for kebabs, it always meant a visit to Hotel Empire. Even with the opening of many new restaurants in recent times the love for Empire has not mitigated. It will take ages for a substitute to diminish the longing for these kebabs that are so memorable to Bengaluru- the menu has started calling it as Empire ‘Special’ Chicken Kebab. Kebabs are popular among people of all ages and are favoured over healthier options like tandoor. Just like wheat and rice, fried chicken has grown to become a staple dish in the house of every non vegetarian. Nowadays it’s hot kebabs that sell on the streets rather than hot cakes. What could be more tempting than a plate of this accompanied with ‘Coin Parathas’? Be it early afternoon, late evening or midnight It’s always the right time for a plate of kebabs. For all the veggies who are thinking that sooner or later, kebabs will no longer interest us- Sorry to disappoint. Our passion is strong like an addiction- we can never get bored or tired of it. Oreo Milkshake

The Oreo milkshake at Chettas is highly recommended by students studying in schools and colleges off brigade road. I know people who travel from as far as Residency Road , Hosur Road, MG Road and Residency Road just to have few sips their favourite drink. Although ‘Chettas’ is a tiny little shop, the level of satisfaction derived from a glass of ‘Oreo Shake’ remains unmatched and is exhilarating. Available for just ₹30, indeed this is much better than the smoothies served at many five star hotels.

SJCC WRITES

– Anjana Narayan

Have you ever wondered how the Josephite hangout place came into being? I recently had a chat with the Chettas owner. He went on to tell me the story.

Chettas Chetta’s (PC: Daniel Rosario)

It was established 15 years back by Mr. Thamban. He is a malayali and  is the owner of  ‘SK Bakery and Juice centre’ or how we Josephites belovedly call it ‘Chettas’. The word ‘Chetta’ means brother in malayalam. The story behind the name of the bakery is quite fascinating. The senior Josephites used to place their orders by addressing Mr. Thamban as Chetta and hence the name.

As our conversation progressed, he told me that he opened the bakery in its current location as it would bring in a lot of customers which include students from St. Joseph’s PUC and College of Commerce. On an average, he earns about Rupees 5000 a day. He…

Chocolate Mud Pie

Desserts is an essential part of a complete meal. The feeling when a perfect meal is accompanied with a perfect dessert is fantastic. No matter whether you have a sweet tooth or not, I bet you can never say no to desserts especially chocolate. The chocolate mud pie at Shezan on Cunningham Road is remarkable and fabulous. The different layers complimenting each other really excite your taste buds. The creaminess of Mousse, the richness of chocolate shavings, the crunch of nuts and the softness of cake makes it mouth- watering and delicious. This cold pudding can give you the much needed refreshment after a hot and tiring day. Once you’ve tasted it you will always come back for more. This is one splendid pie that takes it place in my midnight cravings food list.

Teetar Fry

For a person who loves fried food and meat this dish can truly make him ecstatic. I am talking about the quail bird ladies and gentlemen. Available at a few selected mughlai hotels, the most tasty one is of Chichabas Taj. The soft, tender and palatable meat will melt in one’s mouth. A wonderful substitute for chicken, being small in size it offers the perfect blend of spices and masala that imparts flavour. When freshly marinated and deep fried, the first bite of the teetar gives you heavenly bliss. Ramadan is the time when this delicacy is commonly available. The huge rush and crowd outside stalls selling it can give you an idea of why people relish it.
